The Big Question is......
In this new age where Astronomical numbers are now dwarfed by
Economical numbers. Where billions and billions of stars have be replaced by
trillions and trillions of Dollars, is the old adage penned by Benjamin
Franklin, "A penny saved is a penny earned "still valid or is a penny
just too darned trite to fool around with? How about a copper penny? What would
Sir Thomas Gresham say?
The copper penny is based on the value system for its
composition and weight dating back to 1859.
That's the year of the creation of the US small copper cent. It was a
de-valuation from the large copper cent.
What could you buy a house for in 1857? How much for dinner for two at a nice
restaurant? How about a TV set?
A commodity, like copper, is a hard asset and a hedge against
inflation.
Copper, like all commodities, constantly fluctuates in price. Today, July 2009,
a dollar in copper pennies is only worth $1.35. But in our very recent past in
2008 when copper was trading at an all time high that same dollar in copper
pennies was worth $2.80. At that point saving copper pennies would have yielded
a 280% ROI with no downside risk. BUT, the real question is, will a copper penny
ever be worth a nickel or a dime? When copper does go up in value, Gresham’s
Law says that you won’t be able to find any copper pennies in circulation
anymore.
Would a copper penny be worth saving if you knew for a fact that
it would be worth $1.00 in fifteen years? Nobody can say for sure it will go up
that high in value in that time frame. But saving a copper cent presents you
with an opportunity for an investment with unlimited upside potential and
absolutely no downside risk. It makes good cents to save those copper pennies.
